It made its debut with its first issue dated January 25, 1986. This anthology has been the origin of several highly successful manga series, including notable titles like "Oh My Goddess!," "Genshiken," "Blade of the Immortal," and "Big Windup!" Monthly Afternoon belongs to Kodansha's "1day" magazine series, which includes sister publications like Morning and Evening. As a companion publication, "good! Afternoon" was introduced on November 7, 2008.

Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Ii, with the same title as the one published by Konishi under the alias "Tetsuo," originated on Pixiv. It has been serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon Magazine since its October 2017 issue. It received first place in the "Next Manga Awards 2018" comics category. As of May 2021, the total number of copies in circulation has exceeded 1.3 million.

In May 2021, a promotional video was released to commemorate the release of the fifth volume of the tankōbon. In March 2022, a promotional video was unveiled on the official Twitter account of "Monthly Afternoon" to celebrate the release of the sixth volume. In January 2023, a promotional video was released on the magazine's Twitter and Konishi's Twitter to mark the release of the seventh volume.
